The New Grade 8 Science Curriculum
The Grade 8 Science Curriculum has been completely redesigned to better prepare students for post-secondary studies and to follow up on the new curriculum implemented in grades 7.
The new course is composed of Four units covering each of the major science disciplines.
The new course is composed of Four units covering each of the major science disciplines.
Unit 1 - Water Systems on Earth (Earth Systems)
In this unit, students will learn about what an important role water plays on our Earth. We begin with the water cycle and how water is constantly being filtered and distributed around our planet.
We then discuss oceans and currents, and then relate that to how large bodies of water influence global climate.

Unit 2 - Fluids (Chemistry)
In this unit, students will be studying basic chemistry as it relates to fluid mechanics. We will discuss the basics of fluids and then move into ideas such as density and viscosity.
Once students better understand the concept of fluids, we will examine how forces influence fluids and practical implications such as buoyancy and pressure.

Unit 3 - Optics (Physics)
In this unit, students will be learning about light and how we can manipulate it using both mirrors and lenses. We begin by discussing the nature of light, itself, and then move into the concepts of reflection and refraction.
We then take time to learn about lenses, both in everyday use and their use in scientific equipment.

Unit 4 - Cells, Tissues, Organs, and Systems (Biology)
In this unit, students will be studying life as it relates to both the cell as a basic unit and the larger concepts of organs and organ systems. We will be learning what our bodies are made of and how the function of the entire organism depends on each of it's systems working together in harmony.
